Clay-Based Products Sustainable Development: Some Applications

Clay has a low environmental impact and can develop into many different products. The research presents two case studies. In the first, clay is binder of raw earth doughs in order to produce clay-bricks. We investigate effects natural fibrous reinforcements (rice straws basalt fibers) four mixtures. From comparison with mix without reinforcements, it possible affirm that 0.40% fibers reduce shrinkage by about 25% increase compressive strength 30%. Future studies will focus on identifying tensile elastic modulus, as well optimal percentage fibers. second study, clay, form brick powder (“cocciopesto”), gives high alkaline resistance breathability performance, rendering color plaster. latter does not have artificial additives. plaster respects cultural instance original building. underlines how use local (and traditional) material such be promoter sustainability contemporary building sector. must further uses proper regulatory framework.
